When you can score a new hardcover by Dan Brown or Jeannette Walls or Nicholas Kristof for less than $30—and often significantly less if you shop online sales—why does the average price of an academic hardcover hover around $60 or $75?

I was running an errand Tuesday afternoon when I heard about the price war going on between Target, Amazon, and Wal-Mart over the pricing of a few hot new trade book titles. And I have to say, I’m in agreement with Stephen King, who said he was:
